Welcome to the inaugural episode of our Nursing Home, Long Term Care, and Senior Health video series. In this series, we aim to provide comprehensive insights into the world of nursing homes, long-term care, and the diverse aspects of senior health.
Understanding Nursing Homes: While the term “nursing home” is widely recognized, it’s essential to delve into the specific services these facilities offer. Nursing homes encompass two primary categories: regular nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities. Regular nursing homes assist with daily activities like eating, bathing, and medication management, while skilled nursing facilities provide specialized services such as physical or occupational therapy under the care of licensed professionals.
As of July 2022, over 1.2 million individuals resided in more than 15,000 certified nursing homes, playing a crucial role in delivering care to those in need.
Who Can Reside in Nursing Homes? Contrary to common belief, nursing homes cater to a diverse demographic beyond the elderly. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, as of May 2022, 83.1% of nursing home residents were aged 65 or older. However, 16.9% were below the age of 65, highlighting a significant minority. Younger residents may require rehabilitative care after surgery or injury, while others with specific disabilities necessitate constant care.
The variation in residents’ needs emphasizes the multifaceted role of nursing homes in providing different levels of care and support.
Medical Conditions and Care Needs: Residents in nursing homes often contend with chronic conditions, with arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension being prevalent. While cognitive difficulties like Alzheimer’s disease are common (diagnosed in 49.1% of residents), it’s not universal. Safety concerns, falls, and injuries also contribute to the decision to move into a nursing home.
