Welcome to the second installment of our Nursing Home, Long Term Care, and Senior Health video series. Today, we delve into the nuances of gender and ethnicity among nursing home residents, explore the average duration of stays, and unravel the complexities of costs and payment options.
Gender and Ethnicity in Nursing Homes: Statistically, nursing homes see a higher representation of women, with 59% of short-stay and 66.6% of long-stay residents being female, as reported by the NCHS. Non-Hispanic white individuals constitute a significant portion, accounting for 73.9% of nursing home residents. However, the racial and ethnic mix can vary based on community demographics, with urban areas displaying more diversity. Cultural disparities, language barriers, and culinary preferences contribute to this variation.
Average Stay Duration: Determining the length of stay in a nursing home is challenging due to the diverse care needs across the population. On average, women require long-term care services for 3.7 years, while men average 2.2 years, according to the Administration on Aging. Approximately one-third of individuals in the same age group may not need support at all. For nursing homes specifically, the average stay is one year, with about 35% of people utilizing this type of care.
Costs and Payment for Nursing Home Care: A common misconception is that Medicare covers long-term care in nursing homes. However, Medicare only covers the first 100 days, with specific criteria to meet. Coverage includes full payment for the first 20 days, and a daily copayment of $200 from days 21 to 100. Beyond day 100, alternative payment sources must be arranged. Medicare Advantage plans have different rules.
Paying privately or through long-term care insurance is an option, but costs can be substantial. According to Genworth Financial’s 2021 Cost of Care survey, skilled nursing in a private room averages $108,405 annually. Long-term care insurance may not be viable for everyone due to high costs. As resources are depleted, Medicaid often becomes the primary payment source for nursing home care, covering 62% of residents, although rules vary by state.
